innocent drinks

innocent drinks (innocent) is a company that makes healthy smoothies and juices. The ambition is to become “The Earth's favorite little healthy drinks factory” with the goal to do good – good for the planet, the drinkers and the neighbours. The idea is to inspire a wider change and showcase how we think a factory should be. Therefore, innocent intends to realise a new innovative and environmentally friendly factory at Rotterdam Europoort, being the first to establish itself in the Rotterdam Food Hub of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. The project is to create an integrated Juice terminal, blending and filling business, that will enable them to provide products for their clients, exactly how and when they want them.

Creating this factory enables innocent to do their bit to keep climate change below 1,5 degrees by building a carbon neutral factory. Combining the Juice terminal, blending facility and filling operation on one site, it transforms the supply chain logistics, reducing the road miles of the drinks by at least 25% (a cut of some 13.000 truck movements) and reducing their carbon footprint by 10%. With this goal, innocent changes its impact on the environment and allows the business to leave things better than that they were found.

BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Gold

Deerns guided innocent through the whole certification process. We advised to create a factory that is eligible for an BREEAM-NL Outstanding certificate and to become the first factory to achieve a WELL Gold certificate in the second version of this standard, which promotes health and well-being for building users. The main guiding target in this sustainability framework is to become energy neutral by integrating the following strategies in the new building:

  • Natural daylight access
  • High efficiency lighting fixtures, elevators and equipment (pumps, fans and equipment)
  • Good insulation values in the envelope of the building
  • Renewable energy , Electric heat pumps and boiler help to keep the carbon emissions by zero percent

Water usage reduction

Water efficiency toilets, showers and washbasins are specified for the building, in order to ensure low water consumption of 1.15 m³ / person / year. In addition, rain water will be recycled in the roof in order to be reused in the toilets of the office and therefore reduce water consumption. Water used for irrigation is avoided due to the specification of native plants that life on the natural precipitation of the area. Water and energy metering connected to a central BMS system is implemented for the building in order to track the consumption of these systems and to optimize them.

During the execution phase

The negative impact of the construction will be reduced through certified wood, recyclable materials, limiting the waste production and implementing waste separation strategies. This means suppliers of products will be asked for certificates that make clear their origin and for their delivered products with as little packaging material as possible. A special ecological work protocol has been drawn up for this project as well and a transport plan has been set up for the project in order to promote alternative modes of transportation and reduce the use of vehicles.

Teamwork

The new building of innocent is being developed in an integrated team. Deerns has been the BREEAM and WELL expert team playing a leading and guiding role in this project in order to ensure that the ambitions are gained. In addition, the integration and continuous communication between the different team members reduces the risks in the design and construction phase of the project, resulting in an economical benefit for the owner. Innocent planning follows the RIBA stages and a BREEAM expert is involved in all the stages of the project. Big ambitions such as the one from innocent and the integration of a multidisciplinary team in early stages, is the only way to ensure that innovative and environmental friendly strategies will be driven in projects.
